MoD consults on the future of Sir John Moore Barracks

January 2021 - In November 2016, the Ministry of Defence announced that Sir John Moore Barracks would not be needed by the Army in the future. The site will be vacated between 2022 and 2024.

The MOD's Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) is taking forward plans to redevelop the site, and is looking at the mix of housing and other land uses that might be appropriate. They are currently at the initial stages of the process, and are inviting the public to get involved in the discussions on how the site should be developed and what issues should be considered as part of any future redevelopment proposals.

The DIO and its consultants have prepared a presentation on their initial thoughts, which they presented to the public in a webinar on 16 December last year. They have also set up a form which you can use to send your feedback. The presentation, webinar and feedback form are available by clicking on this link:

This is an important site for Winchester and has the potential to provide significant and well-designed housing, leisure and/or employment uses which could really benefit the city. The Trust very much welcomes the DIO's decision to involve the public at an early stage and has responded to the consultation. Click here to read our response.
